5-year Metabolic Surgery Outcomes for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in China

A study evaluated the long-term impact of bariatric/metabolic surgery in obese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in China. The study included 76 subjects who underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and 25 who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and lasted for 5 years. The study found that RYGB and SG achieved clinically meaningful, sustained impacts on T2D remission in many subjects for up to five years. Significant 5-year reductions in HbA1c, body weight, and BMI were observed, as well as improvements in triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Serious adverse events occurred in 7.9% of RYGB subjects. The study suggests that bariatric/metabolic surgery can be a safe and effective option for appropriately selected subjects with T2D in China.
