Comparing DASH & Mediterranean Diets for High BP: Salt Restriction Trial

This study aimed to compare the blood pressure (BP) effects of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)
and the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on a background of salt restriction. The study randomly assigned individuals with high-normal BP or mild hypertension to different groups: control, salt restriction, DASH diet with salt restriction, or MedDiet with salt restriction. The primary outcome was the difference in office systolic BP among the groups. The results showed that all intervention groups had reduced office and 24-hour ambulatory BP compared to the control group. The MedDiet group had a greater reduction in office systolic BP compared to the other groups. Both the DASH and MedDiet were more effective in lowering BP compared to salt restriction alone.
