GH Mediators and Glycemic Control Deterioration in Adolescent Type 2 Diabetes

This study examined how growth hormone (GH) mediators – insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), growth hormone receptor (GHR), and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1 (IGFBP-1) – are associated with loss of glycemic control in youth with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The study found that lower IGF-1 levels were associated with loss of glycemic control, and an increase in IGF-1 over time predicted lower HbA1c levels. Additionally, higher GHR levels were associated with higher HbA1c levels and lower fasting insulin levels, and an increase in GHR over time predicted higher HbA1c levels. The study also found differences in GH mediators between different Tanner stages. The results suggest that GH mediators may play a role in the development and management of T2D in youth.
